The Chair That Waited 60 Years to Shine: Wegner’s CH88
Some designs are so forward-thinking, they simply need time to catch up with the world. The CH88 Dining Chair by Hans J. Wegner is one of them.
Designed in 1955 and brought to life nearly six decades later, the CH88 is a quiet reminder that great design never ages—it just waits for the right moment.
Hans J. Wegner: The Master of the Chair
Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) is often called the “Master of the Chair”—and for good reason. Over his lifetime, he designed nearly 500 chairs, many of which are now icons of Danish Modern design, including the legendary Wishbone Chair (CH24) and The Round Chair.
Wegner’s philosophy was rooted in craftsmanship first. Beginning his career as a cabinetmaker’s apprentice at just 14 years old, he developed an intimate understanding of wood, joinery, and proportion. He famously believed that a chair should have “no backside”—it should be beautiful from every angle.
His approach, often described as organic functionality, blends minimalist forms with natural materials to create furniture that feels as good as it looks. That philosophy earned him global recognition, from the Lunning Prize to an honorary doctorate from London’s Royal College of Art, with his work exhibited in museums like MoMA in New York.

The CH88: A Prototype Ahead of Its Time
The CH88 Dining Chair was originally designed for the Helsingborg International Exhibition (H55) in Sweden in 1955. At the time, it existed only as a prototype—and a rare one.
Unlike many of Wegner’s designs, the CH88 boldly combined industrial steel with warm wood, revealing his experimental side and his willingness to push material boundaries. Though admired, it never entered production during his lifetime.
That changed in 2014.

From Archive to Icon
To celebrate what would have been Wegner’s 100th birthday, Carl Hansen & Søn brought the CH88 into full production for the very first time—almost 60 years after its original design.
The result is a chair that feels both timeless and distinctly modern. Soft, minimalist lines meet functional engineering, all grounded in Wegner’s unwavering commitment to quality craftsmanship.
